Its that time of year when you see everyone’s formerly green and bountiful garden turning brown and looking more like a jungle. We decided that rather than fight it, we’d embrace it and turn all that unused plant life into free feed for our goats! We put our two junior does into the garden and let them go to town! They have loved snacking on the leftovers and especially like playing “king of the hill” on the large round hay bales we threw in there to use as mulch. Take a look at the video below!
Our garden was a big success this year, the first time we have had a garden in our new homestead. However, it will need some cleaning up for next year to be more efficient. One of our plans includes mulching the walkways with cardboard and old hay to keep the weeds down. Eventually we’ll plant low growing clover or other green cover crop, but the weeds left from years of neglect from the previous owners made it very difficult to work with. We found a neighbor with old round bales from last year that have started to rot so we were able to get several truck loads of hay bales from them for only $5 each! The bales will be used in our raised beds for deep litter for our rabbit kits over the winter and will be placed on cardboard in the paths. Before we get to that, the goats are making good use of them as play toys!
