You may remember when last month we wrote about breaking a hen of her broodiness (article here). Since that time we have had to break broodiness again, and this week we had a hen go broody again! All three times the hen has been a Buff Orpington. Since all the Buff hens look the same, I don’t know if it’s been the same hen going broody or different hens.
This week we decided to stop fighting it and just let the hen brood eggs.
We setup our green chicken tractor with food and water, plus shavings for a nest and some recently laid eggs. Separating the hen allows her to focus on brooding her eggs, and gives her private access to food and water.
We grabbed the hen from a nesting box and tucked her in the green tractor. She arranged the nest, sat down, and nudged the eggs under her.
It’s been over a week since we setup the nest and put the hen on it, and she’s been sitting on the eggs!
Sometimes hens stop brooding, but this one seems to be sticking it out. We should be sharing news of baby chicks in a few weeks!
