The chicks have outgrown the small brooder box we kept in our mud room. Luckily we bought this larger brooder box at the same time we bought the small one. We recently got it all setup to house the chicks until they are ready to be living outside.
We put a few 2×4 scraps in that will have the feeder and water sit on. The floor is covered in pine shavings which are great at absorbing moisture and keeping the box nice and clean.
We hung a thermometer sensor in the far corner of the brooder box so we could keep track of the lowest temperature in the habitat. They still need it to be kept above 80 degrees so if it gets too cold we can come add another heat lamp or cover the vent with a towel.
The chicks are still growing very quickly. They resemble full grown chickens now more than the chicks they once were… They enjoy jumping up on the edge of the brooder box anytime we open it up to feed or check in on them.
We had a warm day recently and that gave us the opportunity to let the chickens enjoy some time outdoors. We deployed them in the small chicken tractor we built and let them go to down scratching and exploring. They seemed to enjoy basking in the sun and were very curious of all the goodies in the lawn.
